no running. no touching. no photography. no cell phones. these are a museum’s posted rules. we have also learned unspoken rules that are to be observed on a museum visit. when entering the institution voices should be dimmed, contemplative brows cocked and the personal reflective space of other visitors respected. in many ways our behavior in a museum is similar to participating in a religious service or visiting a funeral home. if the purpose of art is to invigorate the living experience, it is inappropriate that visits to a museum are staid and measured.
lost in the museum provides an alternative visitor’s guide to the legion of honor museum located at land’s end park in san francisco. Bby adopting the aesthetic vocabulary of the neighboring lincoln park golf course, the re-configured visitor’s guide contextualizes the this specific location within an art historical context and the art within the it’s current surroundings.
the alternative guide preserves the form and content of standard guide. within the quatro-fold form the gallery map, building amenities, museum history and collection notes remain. to encourage a more active interaction between visitors, a game has been overlaid. the visitor is asked to engage with each period of art presented in the museum as if it were a hole of golf. In asking the visitor to apply a scoring system it activates their role as a viewer and encourages dialogue between players/visitors/viewers.
