The San Francisco Art Institute will graduate nearly one hundred students in 2009. Compiling a catalogue that adequately presents two years of the work of a large graduate class is difficult. Encapsulating the energy and depth of the dialogue which that class generates is nearly impossible.
This catalog captures some of the discussions that occur around the formal setting of the classroom and lecture hall. These conversations begin in the hallway, develop into projects over food and drink, and become collaborative efforts. It by no means captures all the students in the school, but it does depict some of the dynamic interaction that develops as the classroom gives way to the studio, as theory turns into practice. If the purpose of an academic institution is to promote discourse, then this catalogue serves as an addition to an already thriving conversation.
