we share the same secrets.   drawers are structures that veil behavior and protect what is important to us.  on first inspection, a drawer’s content speaks of quotidian realities.  when that drawer is placed in relationship to other drawers, however, the content extends from the everyday to the everywhere.   the secrets tucked into one drawer are rarely dramatically different from those held in another.

over the course of a year i systematically documented the drawers of many kitchens.   from the archive which developed, i selected drawers from twelve kitchens for these two works.  in untitled (part I) the most basic typologies are presented.   inside the drawers spoons nestle, towels stack, boxes align and utensils bundle.  the twelve kitchens do not appear to be markedly different; the secrets within unite rather than separate us.

notions of individuality begin to emerge when space permits and the basics have been attended.  as the drawers multiply, the quirks of the individual begin to emerge.  untitled (part II) presents what could be considered the marks of the individual.  corks and video tapes, astronaut food and exotic teas, however, do not define the individual; ultimately these things are thin like a plastic bag and as hollow as an empty drawer.
